A new group aimed at preserving rural Ireland have launched a campaign to stop certain TDs getting re-elected.

The anti-pylon and wind farm group say that some politicians are ‘toxic’ for rural Ireland.

They say that 2020 energy targets for Ireland could be reached without turbines and pylons by converting Moneypoint station in Co Clare to sustainable biomass.

New lobby group aims to unseat politicians ‘toxic to rural Ireland’: Breaking News.ie, 27 October 2015

A new alliance of community groups is to mount a pre-election campaign to unseat what it calls “toxic” politicians.

Protect Rural Ireland has said it will not put candidates before the electorate, but instead will campaign against elected representatives who have supported the construction of wind turbines.

The group said it wanted to protect the country’s tourism, agriculture and equine industries.

Pylon plan in jeopardy over EirGrid concerns about size: Irish Independent, 27 October 2015

A controversial pylon project for the west may be shelved amid concerns that a windfarm proposed by the ESB and Bord na Mona may not be large enough to justify the works.

It is understood that national grid operator EirGrid has written to the companies seeking clarification around the size of the Oweninny wind farm, planned for Bellacorick in Co Mayo, which is currently in planning.

The companies have sought permission for a 112-turbine farm, which would require the transmission system to undergo a substantial upgrade at a projected cost of €200m if the 100km line is erected on pylons, and up to €500m if undergrounded.

Remember the controversial Cork-Kildare power line plan? It’s being scrapped: Yahoo News, 8 October 2015

STATE-OWNED ELECTRICITY grid operator Eirgrid has confirmed that a proposed overhead power line running from Cork to Kildare will not go ahead.

The company’s €500 million plan to construct a network of pylons carrying high-voltage lines across as many as nine counties had faced consistent criticism from community groups.

An independent panel said earlier today that Eirgrid intends to instead use the current grid infrastructure from Moneypoint in Clare to the greater Dublin area.
